BSOM201: How to Preach the Gospel: You Can Do It If You Try [Audio]

Tom the young preacher, about 1983.
I can think of no greater joy than to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to lead men and women and boys and girls into the saving knowledge of Him.
Our Father’s heart beats for the lost. Before Jesus left this earth, He enlisted us to take His message to the world. It was His final instructions to HIs followers. That tells me that all of us should make it our business to learn How to Preach the Gospel.
This podcast is focused on training you to use the tools that God has given you to win souls for Him. You can do it if you try! Experience is the best teacher. In this podcast you will learn:
- How to prepare your heart to preach the Gospel.
- A simple outline for presenting the Gospel.
- How to give an effective invitation to call people to faith and repentance.
I pray this podcast will be a blessing to you and will help you to fulfill a desire in your heart to win others for him.

How to Preach the Gospel
“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15, KJV. “And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.” Mark 16:20, KJV.
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:13-17, KJV.
Mark 16:15-20, preach the Gospel to every creature
Preach—“to be a herald, to proclaim, make a public proclamation of truth, to publish, proclaim openly: something which has been done.” The evangelistic message expresses the heart of God towards the person who is without God and without hope in this world. It proclaims the Good News of salvation and explains how to obtain it. Some think it is speaking with fervor and strong emotion. It may or may not be emotional, but by definition it MUST have Gospel content. (Acts 11:14, who will tell you WORDS, whereby you may be saved) Preach Christ—born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died on the cross for our sins, was buried, rose again, ascended to heaven, poured out the Holy Spirit, and it coming again.
“For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” 1 Corinthians 1:17-21, KJV.
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16, KJV.
“Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.” Acts 8:5, KJV.
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, KJV.
1. Preparing your heart to share the Gospel.
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:” 1 Peter 3:15, KJV.
Grow in your understanding of the Bible, especially the redemptive truths. Get key scriptures in your memory. Speak extemporaneously from your heart under the unction of the Holy Spirit.
Be filled with the Spirit…
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” Acts 1:8, KJV.
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;” Ephesians 5:18, KJV.
“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:13, KJV.
Prayer and Compassion
“And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.” Matthew 9:35-38, KJV.
“The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.” 2 Timothy 2:6, KJV.
“And I am sure that, when I come unto you, I shall come in the fulness of the blessing of the gospel of Christ.” Romans 15:29, KJV.
You can only give what you have: Receive peace to give peace, forgiveness to give forgiveness, cleansing to give cleansing, joy to give joy. Restoration of fellowship:
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:7-9, KJV.
Get ready! Live ready! Make it your goal to be ready to preach at the drop of a hat.
2 A Simple Outline anyone can use to share the Gospel.
Introduce yourself. Be human and friendly. Show love for the people. Read a scripture text, often from the Gospel, but it can be OT or about anywhere. However if you use a text from the epistles, be aware that these letters were written to church people. You will have to adapt it to your audience and it could get you off track. Remember, you are talking to people who are not yet in the family of God. Wherever you start, make a beeline for Jesus! Use the pronoun “you” rather than “we.” Train yourself to talk normally, from the heart and to the heart. You can include your testimony or elements of your testimony. You can also have other people share their testimony before you preach. Or if you’re a musician you can sing songs with good Gospel content. Then just present these elements:
-How I learned to preach evangelistically. (Haiti, Nursing homes, India) Experience is the best teacher.
-Elements of the Evangelistic Sermon (learned in India, found later TL Osborn used these same points)
1. GOD’S CREATION—God made everything good. (Gen. 1:1, Gen. 1:26-28, Exo 20:3)
-Goodness of God in creation
-Man made in His image
-Idolatry is a slap in the face of the Almighty Creator God. Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
2. SATAN’S DECEPTION—Man fell into sin and death. (Gen. 3:1-19, Rom 5:12, Eph. 2:12, Rom. 3:23, Rom. 6:23)
-Holiness of God and His incompatibility with sin
-Bad news before the Good News (word that brings conviction, Acts 2:37)
-Root of all the problems in the world
3. CHRIST’S SUBSTITION—Jesus Christ came to save you. (John 3:1-17, John 14:6, 2 Co 5:17-21)
-Billy Graham fails to preach the cross in one of his meetings, little results (1 Cor. 2:2)
-The opportunity to present the love, mercy and goodness of God
4. OUR RESTORATION—You must receive Christ. (John 1:12, Rom 10:9-10, Mar 1:15)
-It’s not automatic. You must do something.
-Faith and Repentance; be very clear about what you want them to do. . . Preview the call.
