Notes: Healing the Sick

The purpose of this lesson is to impress upon the believer the call to minister healing to the sick and to give basic instructions on how to minister healing.

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. Mark 16:15-20, KJV.

HEALING IS JUST AS MUCH A PART OF THE GOSPEL AS SALVATION

Forget not ALL His benefits. Psalm 103.1-5

Healing is part of the redemptive package. Isaiah 53:4-6

(v4, Youngs Literal Translation) Surely our sicknesses he hath borne, And our pains, he hath carried them.

By His stripes we were healed. 1 Peter 2:24

The devil wants you sick. God wants you well. Acts 10:38, 3 John 2

Jesus wants to heal you. Matthew 8:2-3, Mark 1:40-42, Luke 5:12-13

Jesus was anointed to heal and set the captives free. Luke 4:18,19, Acts 10:38

Jesus’ ministry included teaching, preaching and healing the sick. Matthew 9:35

JESUS WANTS YOU TO HEAL THE SICK

You are to continue to do what He began. Acts 1:1

He said to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead. Matthew 10:1-8, Luke 10:8-9

You can do the works of Jesus. John 14:12

As He is, so are we. 1 John 4:17,

You are the body of Christ (Anointed One) 1 Corinthians 12:27

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. Hebrews 13:8

GOD USES HEALING TO BRING PEOPLE TO HIMSELF

5,000 men come to the Lord after the healing of the lame man. Acts 4:4

A city comes to God as a result of Philip’s miracle ministry. Acts 8:6-8

Healing closes the mouths of the skeptics. Acts 4:13-14

WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO ARE NOT HEALED?

Remember, you are the delivery person, not the healer, so do what He says and leave the results to Him. There are many reasons why people are not healed, and there are times when we just don’t know. There were times in Jesus’ ministry when He healed them all. (Matthew 12:15, Luke 6:19) But it also says of Jesus’ ministry in His hometown, “And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.” Mark 6:5, 6, KJV. Regardless, God’s Word is still true! There are times that we can help people overcome their obstacles to receiving healing, but we don’t want to be like Job’s comforters blaming people for their problems. Compassion. David Livingstone has one convert, but that doesn’t mean the message of salvation doesn’t work.

Some reasons people are not healed:

• Doubt and unbelief (Mark 9:23)
• Traditions of man
• Failure to judge yourself, unconfessed sin.
• Unforgiveness to others.
• Community unbelief
• Anxiety or inward problems.
• Failure to keep natural health laws.

There was also a time when Jesus laid hands on someone after He had already ministered healing to them. (Mark 8:22-26)

Sometimes people need ministry to their inner man before they can receive healing for the outer man. God’s plan is healing and restoration–spirit, soul and body. (1 Thessalonians 5:23)  “…Jesus Christ maketh thee whole…” Acts 9:34, KJV.

Some healings are progressive. Luke 17:14

Sometimes healing requires standing on the Word of God. Ephesians 6:13

There is no defeat for the child of God. Minister salvation. 1 Corinthians 15:55-58

The greatest healing anyone will ever receive is the new birth. John 3:3, 2 Cor. 5:17

SOME BIBLICAL METHODS OF MINISTERING HEALING

Through the laying on of hands. Mark 16:18

Through commanding in the name of Jesus. Acts 3:1-8, 16

By teaching God’s willingness to heal. Mt. 8:1-3, Luke 13:10-16

Through the prayer of agreement Matthew 18:19

Asking the person if they believe they will be healed. Matthew 9:28

Through anointing with oil. James 5:14-15

By commanding the sickness to go and healing to come. Acts 9:40-41

Through the Word of Knowledge. Acts 14:9-10

Through using your authority and binding evil powers. Matthew 16:19, Luke 10:19

Through compassion. Matthew 20:34

Through the manifested presence of God. Luke 6.17-19

Through commanding the person to act. Acts 14:8-10, Mark 3:1-6, Acts 3:1-8

Through wisdom about lifestyle changes. James 1:5

Through ministering forgiveness of sins. Psalm 103: 2-3,

By releasing unforgiveness to others. Matthew 18:34-35

Through the power of the Word. Psalm 107:20, Luke 7:1-10

By using the Word to build faith. Romans 10:17

Through sharing testimonies of God’s healing power. Mark 5:27

HEALING THROUGH THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

You shall receive power to be a proof-producer. Acts 1:8

Power (Greek, dunamis, from which we get our word, dynamite) force, miraculous power, ability,  abundance, might, power, strength, The same word is used when the healing power went out of Jesus to heal the woman with the issue of blood and in other places. Mark 5:30

Testimony of Charles and Francis Hunter, who prayed for many people for healing, but had little results, until they were baptized in the Holy Spirit. Later, through consistency, they said that they began to see about 80 percent of the people they prayed for healed.

USING COMMANDS TO HEAL THE SICK

Jesus rebuked the fever of Peter’s mother in law. Mt. 8:14-15, Mk. 1:29-31, Luke 4:38-39

Speak the Word only and my servant will be healed. Luke 7:1-10

Jesus prayed out loud only for the sake of those around him, but them commanded Lazarus to rise. John 11:41-43, KJV.

Notice the method. Peter commanded him to rise up and walk in the name of Jesus. He didn’t pray for Him to be healed, he spoke it to be.  Acts 3:1-8

Tabitha, get up. Acts 9:40-42

HEALING THROUGH THE LAYING ON OF HANDS

Mark 16.18 (LB) they will be able to place their hands on sick people and heal them.

The Holy Ghost is the power source, laying on of hands is the way the connection is made, the name of Jesus is the authority. Get busy laying hands on the sick and seeing them recover, in Jesus name. Seek God for guidance and wisdom. Your confidence will grow.

HEALING THROUGH FAITH

Daughter, your faith has made you whole. Mt. 9:20-22,  Mk. 5:25-34, Luke 8:43-48

His name through faith in His name. Acts 3:16

If you can believe all things are possible. Mk. 9:23

Paul saw that the crippled man had faith to be healed. Acts 14:8-10

These signs shall follow them that believe. Mk. 16:15-20

HEALING THROUGH AGREEMENT

Ask the person what they want from the Lord. Mt. 20:29-34

Come into agreement with them at their level of faith. Mt. 18:19

HEALING THROUGH REVELATION

I do what I see my Father doing.  John 5:19

Fingers in the ear and spit on the tongue. Mk. 7:32-37

Wigglesworth: It all depends on what the Father is saying.

TIPS FOR DEVELOPING THE HEALING MINISTRY

Meditate on the promises and commands of Jesus concerning healing. Joshua 1:8

Meditate on the miracles of Jesus and the apostles, reminding yourself of John 14:12

Associate with those who are healing the sick. Deuteronomy 34:9

Be willing to receive instruction about how to minister. Matthew 17:19-21

Live the spirit-filled life and walk in love. Galatians 6:5

Practice the things you have learned. Illustration: Doctors practice. James 1:22

Pray in the Spirit. Jude 20

Remember that the Greater One lives in you. 1 John 4:4

Cultivate an awareness of the presence of God.  Luke 6:17-19

Intercede for those you are going to minister to.  Rom 8:26-27

Cultivate group faith and a corporate anointing for healing.  Acts 4:23-33

Always give God glory for the miracles that he does. Beware of  receiving glory for God’s miracles. Luke 17:1, Acts. 3:12-13, Pr. 27:21

PRACTICAL EXERCISE James 1:22

Share the message of divine healing using your favorite scriptures and a testimony of healing. As the person if they would like to receive healing from the Lord and then minister to them using one or more of the methods we have shared.

HOMEWORK

Study and meditate the scriptures in this lesson, prepare yourself to minister to the sick through prayer and practice ministering to the sick.
