Getting on God’s GPS
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.” Psalms 37:23, KJV.
I think of God’s guidance as our heavenly GPS (Global Positioning System). On my phone, I can open Google Maps at any time and will see a map with a blinking dot indicating exactly where I am. If I type in the name of a town or business or church or an address, I will immediately see a map of how to get to the new location with a step by step list of directions which will get me to the desired haven.
The Global Positioning System works from a series of satellites high above the earth which are able to determine my exact position. These satellites give me a “higher perspective” than I could ever receive down here on earth. In the same way, our God has a much-needed higher perspective which is available to us every day of our lives. He knows where we are, where we should be going, and exactly how we can get there.
We may have our 5-year plans, our strategies, and our goal setting, but our God knows much better where we should go and how we can get there. If we are sensitive to Him, our Holy Ghost GPS will progressively lead us into our destiny. As the scripture says, “O Lord. . . I know that [the determination of] the way of a man is not in himself; it is not in man [even in a strong man or in a man at his best] to direct his [own] steps.” Jeremiah 10:23, Amplified. We need God’s guidance!
He tells us that “our steps” are ordered by the Lord, not our leaps and bounds. Things are most often accomplished just that way—one step at a time. As my wife, Susan, likes to say, “Just put one foot in front of the other!” It’s amazing how far you can go and how much you can accomplish by following that advice.
I looked up the word translated “good” in the King James Version. One of the meanings is “valiant.” The steps of a “valiant” man, woman, boy or girl are ordered of the Lord. In other words, we must be courageous in order to receive and to follow the Lord’s guidance. I wonder how many of us have been thrown off course from God’s plan in our lives because of fear. The Holy Spirit is directing us to launch out in a new direction—a new profession or business, a new step in ministry, witnessing to a friend, or walking away from an addictive or negative behavior. But too often, we are controlled by fear and we put the brakes on.
We must overcome fear! As God told Joshua as he was about to lead the children of Israel into the promised land, “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” Joshua 1:8, 9, KJV.
Where could Joshua find the courage he needed? By meditating in God’s Word day and night. Likewise as we live in God’s Word and constantly put it into practice in our lives, we will have courage and our godly GPS systems will work effectively to bring us into the place of victory and fulfillment.
Finally He says, “he delighteth in his way.” We can enjoy the ride, even though there may be some rough spots in the road. We should not be so consumed with the future fulfillment of every goal in our life that we can’t enjoy where we are today. Too often, we are like children traveling with their parents who are always asking, “Are we there yet?” We may not have arrived, but if our eyes are open, there is some nice scenery along the way and an adventure around every corner. When we are sold out to God we delight to do His will!
As you begin the next leg of your journey in 2014, may God order your steps, and lead you to a place of greater fulfillment, prosperity, and success in the Kingdom of God. Submit yourself to God’s will, refuse to be controlled by fear, and expect Him to guide you joyfully every step of the way.
