Finding Guidance for Your Life
Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. (Psalms 119:105, NKJV).
In the mornings, I like to get up before my wife, Susan, and enjoy some alone time and prayer.
On the nightstand next to the bed, I have a battery-powered light, which I use to move about without disturbing Susan by turning on the lamp. When I quietly slip down the stairs to the first floor, I hold that light downward, facing the steps. It is literally “a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.”
Without that light shining on my path, it would be a dangerous trek through the dark stairway to my first-floor destination. In the same way, navigating life through dark circumstances without the Word of God is dangerous. We must be intentional about shining the light of God’s Word on our path.
In 2 Timothy, we are told that the Word of God is “… profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16, NKJV). Simply put, the Word of God will teach you how to live.
I have been walking with the Lord for 48 years, but I still find that I need a daily dose of “instruction in righteousness” to keep me on the path. There’s something about opening the Word of God, reading it, and allowing it to speak to me, that makes all the difference. So often, something that I have read speaks specifically into my life and circumstances. When I apply that Word, the results are powerful!
Proverbs tells us, Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil. (Proverbs 4:26-27, NKJV). In other words, think about what you are doing. Are you really following the Lord with your actions, or are you allowing other things to influence your decisions? Are you being motivated by fleshly desires or people’s opinions, or are you truly being guided by the instructions in God’s Word?
Many people are seeking guidance through other means or other people. Perhaps it’s from a spiritual guru, a prophet, or the latest self-help book. But too often, these are just man’s ideas and can even lead you into a dark place. But if you allow the Word of God to have first place in your life, it will give you a clear and reliable light on your path.
Through the cross of Calvary, Jesus has made a way for you to walk with God. He canceled all your sins and called you into a new life. That new life begins when you make Jesus the Lord of your life. Then you can begin to walk on the path that God has given you. He will illuminate that path and show you the way forward through His Word.
Walking with God is a choice. When you choose to follow the Lord and put His Word first place, you will begin to see His plan and the path that He has for you. Truly, His Word will be a light unto your path and a lamp unto your feet and guide you in the way that you should go.
Pray a prayer like this:
Dear Father, I thank you for sending Jesus to die for my sins. I believe that you raised Him from the dead, and I confess Jesus as the Lord of my life. I choose to follow Jesus! Lord, show me the path of life through your Word. When I open Your Word, speak to me, and let Your Word be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Thank you, Father, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
