Love, Honor and Respect [Audio]
We are living in a time when there is great hatred, dishonor and disrespect in the world. This is fueled by talk radio, cable TV news channels, and social media. People are viciously attacking people with words on the internet as well as physically attacking others around the world. Christians need to run counter-culture to this and manifest the love and mercy of God in order to bring healing in the land. How we treat people, being aware and concerned about other people’s feelings is a measure of how we love, honor and respect God.
On this podcast episode, you will learn:
- Who we are to love, honor and respect.
- How a person can truly love and respect other people.
- How love, honor, and respect operates in the family.
- How love, honor and respect in our churches and communities can bring positive change in the world.
Here’s the notes used for this podcast:
LOVE, HONOR AND RESPECT
“Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Matthew 22:37-40, KJV.
We sin with our tongues…
“But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.” James 3:8-10, KJV. (Read entire chapter)
We are living in a time when there is great hatred, dishonor and disrespect in the world. As Christians, we need to run counter-culture to this in order to bring healing in the land. Turn away from the things of the world! The spirit of this age. 2 Timothy 3:1-5
This is fueled by the media. Cable TV. Talk Radio. Hatred for Muslims. Charlie Hebdo. I am not Charlie! Social media, people viciously attacking people with words on the internet. (flaming—hostile interaction, often involving profanity. How we treat people, being aware and concerned about other people’s feelings is important to God. How we love, honor and respect others is a measure of how we love, honor and respect God.
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5, KJV. Incontinent—self control.
THE THING THAT GOD IS LOOKING FOR MOST IN US IS LOVE
He demonstrated love by sending His Son. Jn. 3:16, Phil. 2, Jesus humility, washing feet.
“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” 1 Corinthians 13:13, KJV.
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” John 13:35, KJV.
“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.” Romans 13:8-10, KJV.
“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” Galatians 5:13-16, KJV.
YOU CAN LOVE!
“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” Romans 5:5, KJV. Also 2 Cor. 5:17,
“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.” 1 John 4:8, KJV.
“Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,” Ephesians 1:15, KJV.
LOVE, HONOR AND RESPECT IN FAMILY (It starts at home)
Love YOUR wife…
“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.” Ephesians 5:25-28, KJV.
Story—man who didn’t kiss his wife for 25 years, then he shot someone else who did. You are called to the meet the emotional as well as the physical needs of your spouse. This is Bible! You say, that’s not me. Well, change!!! (Rom 12:1-2) Love with your words, deeds, affection. Every journey begins with one step. Set your affection. Relationships must be cultivated, both with God and with man.
“Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.” 1 Peter 3:7, KJV.
Respect YOUR husband… disrespect is very hurtful to everyone, but perhaps especially to men.
“Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.” Ephesians 5:33, KJV.
33 Amp. However, let each man of you [without exception] love his wife as [being in a sense] his very own self; and let the wife see that she respects and reverences her husband [[a]that she notices him, regards him, honors him, prefers him, venerates, and esteems him; and [b]that she defers to him, praises him, and loves and admires him exceedingly].
Honor your parents…
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:1-4, KJV.
-If you don’t honor your parents, you are not only hurting them, you are hurting yourself. Parents, if you want your children to honor you, you need to honor authority in your life (teachers, your boss, other Christians, government leaders, church leaders). Don’t have roast preacher for lunch.)
WHO ELSE ARE WE TO HONOR (value, esteem, dignity)
Honor God…
“Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:” Proverbs 3:9, KJV.
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Revelation 4:11, KJV.
Honor church members…
“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;” Romans 12:10, KJV.
“And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.” 1 Corinthians 12:23, KJV.
Honor older people…
“Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.” Leviticus 19:32, KJV.
“Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. Honour widows that are widows indeed.” 1 Timothy 5:1-3, KJV.
Honor your boss…
“Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.” 1 Timothy 6:1, KJV.
Honor government leaders…
“Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people.” Exodus 22:28, KJV. YLT says revile God.
“Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.” Ecclesiastes 10:20, KJV.
“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.” Romans 13:1-7, KJV.
It doesn’t say only honor them as long as you agree with them. This was written in a time of evil leadership. Honor the ruler of thy people.
Honor church leaders…
“And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you; And to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. And be at peace among yourselves. Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.” 1 Thessalonians 5:12-15, KJV.
-Warn the unruly. Carnal Christians with unruly tongues. Mature believers have a responsibility to warn those who are running off at the mouth, criticizing leadership, hurting other people, and not to be criminally silent.
Honor all men…
“Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.” 1 Peter 2:17, KJV.
Story: A pastor talks to some teenagers. One of them blasphemes the Lord. Then the pastor says, “You’re nothing but a no good punk.” Then he couldn’t sleep. God tells him he should apologize to the young man. He was made in the image of God also.
REPENT
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:7-9, KJV.
